Agriculture: helping poor families

Both Kenya and Tanzania are agricultural countries. We can help poor families through a number of simple ways that could ensure not only their survival, but also the possibility of developing an economic potential.

Seeds

Families who have a small plot are many times in the situation of not being able to grow anything because they lack funds to buy seeds. Here is an example of such problems:

Developed countries have a special interest in buying corn from Africa, for the production of biofuel (bioethanol). As a result, the price of corn doubled in Kenya and Tanzania in the last years. If a poor family could afford to buy corn flour so that they could eat twice a week, the doubled price means that the same family can eat only once a week.

Goat

You can buy a goat to a very poor family. The cost of a goat is between 65-150 dollars, depending on region, breed, and milk production. This includes vitamins, feeds, vet, and a shelter. It produces milk for the children and the first kiddy is given to another poor family.

Chicken

Buying six chickens for a poor family ensures the possibility of having eggs and meat. Six chickens cost 60 dollars, and this includes the feeds, vitamins and a coop.
